Whether you're grilling steaks, chicken, or pork chops, barbecue sauce can be an ally. Barbecue sauce is available in a wide range of flavors that can give your food a sweet taste or a spicy taste — or virtually any taste in between. If you're relatively new to using this sauce, it's important that you take the right approach when you're using it on food that you're grilling. Here are some tips that you'll need to keep in mind.
Use A Small Bowl
It may be tempting to open your jar of barbecue sauce, dip your brush into it, and begin to brush the sauce onto your meat — repeating this process as many times as you want to achieve your desired taste. The problem with this idea is that when you insert the brush into the jar of sauce after your brush has already touched the meat, you're introducing bacteria off the meat into the sauce. This could mean that the sauce begins to grow mold between now and the next time that you plan to use it. Your best option is to pour some of the barbecue sauce into a small bowl and dip your brush into the bowl, thus eliminating this risk of contamination.
Wait Until The End
You might be tempted to brush barbecue sauce onto your meat as soon as you put it on the grill, but this isn't generally the best way to proceed. The sweetness of the sauce can cause it to burn when it's on the grill for a long time — and a layer of sauce can also prevent the exterior of the meat from searing in a desired manner. Additionally, if you plan to flip the meat multiple times, much of the sauce may come off in the process. You're better off waiting until the meat is almost done, and then applying the sauce on each side.
Lower The Heat
In addition to waiting until the end of the cooking process to apply your barbecue sauce, it's a good idea to lower the grill's heat at this time, too. When the heat is high, flare ups are common. Flare ups are bad news when you have sauce on the meat, as flames can scorch the sauce. As soon as you're ready to apply your sauce, turning the grill to a low setting or even off completely will yield a favorable result.
